4 EYE DISEASES THAT CAN BE DETECTED VIA RETINAL IMAGING

Ophthalmoscopy, also known as a retinal exam, is one of the most important eye exams. In this procedure, the eye doctor may apply eye drops to dilate your pupil before checking the retina or the back part of your eyes using a retinal imaging device. The resulting images often reveal the overall state of your eye health.

Certain eyesight-related diseases can be detected through retinal imaging. These are the following:

1. Glaucoma

Retinal imaging can reveal damage to the optic nerve caused by intraocular pressure in the eyes. Detecting glaucoma is crucial because it is asymptomatic in its early stages. If not managed right away, it can lead to permanent and immutable vision loss.

2. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Retinal imaging can also reveal fluid leakage or bleeding in the back of the eye, which is one of the many indications of AMD. It is among the leading causes of blindness in individuals over 50 years of age. The macula or the sensitive part of the retina slowly degenerates, leading to distorted straight lines, diminished vision quality and blurred central vision.

3. Diabetic Retinopathy

Screening for diabetes usually involves the eye doctor performing retinal imaging to detect early signs of diabetic retinopathy. Symptoms may include blurred and fluctuating vision caused by weakened blood vessels in the retina. In more severe cases, the imaging may reveal blood clots and scar tissue, which may cause the retinal detachment that leads to vision loss.

4. Ocular Melanoma

Certain types of cancers can also be detected through retinal imaging, including ocular melanoma. The risk of having dark spots in the retina may increase because of certain factors like exposure to light for longer periods as well as having inherited skin conditions or pigmentations.
