types of contact lenses for different needs

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lens

Contact lenses are used to correct different vision problems. They feel natural as they move with your eyes without the restraints of eyeglass frames. Also, they don’t fog up unlike glasses, and many feel more confident wearing them.

They are made from various kinds of plastic, but the most common types are hard and soft lenses. In this post, your local optometrist discusses different types of contact lenses.

Hard Contact Lenses

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lens – These contact lenses are created from plastic combined with other materials. They are firm but still allow oxygen to pass through the eye. RGP lenses offer sharper vision compared to soft lenses.

They are very helpful for people with astigmatism and keratoconus, but can also be used to correct myopia or nearsightedness.

Soft Contact Lenses

Daily Wear Contacts – You wear them when you’re up and remove them when you go to bed. Some are disposable, or you replace them every single day. There are also ones that last for weeks or months. These will likely be recommended for you if you don’t wear contacts that much.

Extended Wear Contacts – These lenses can be worn in your sleep, but they have to be cleaned and disinfected once a week. However, they increase your chances of getting an eye infection. Talk to your eye doctor before considering this contact lens type.

Toric Contacts – Toric lenses are a vision correction option for people with astigmatism. They can be used for daily or extended wear.

Colored or Tinted Contacts – These contact lenses are tinted to alter the color of your eyes and used to correct your vision. They are offered in extended, daily wear and toric lenses.

Decorative or Cosmetic Contacts – They transform the appearance of your eyes, but don’t correct the vision. Though they aren’t used for vision correction, you’ll still need your doctor’s prescription to get them. To prevent eye infections, they should be maintained like prescription contacts.
