things you need to know about orthokeratology

Orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k, vision shaping and corneal reshaping therapy (CRT), refers to a non-surgical method of correcting refractive errors. But what’s involved with procedure, and are you a good candidate for it?

Candidates for Ortho-K

Both adults and children can benefit from ortho-k, including those with mild to moderate myopia or nearsightedness – with or without mild astigmatism. Children and young adults who are too young to undergo LASIK or are not eligible for it due to dry eyes or some other reason are also good candidates for ortho-k. The same can be said for those who play sports or perform work in dusty environments, where wearing contact lenses can pose problems.

To learn whether or not you or your child is a good candidate for ortho-k, you have to first undergo a comprehensive eye exam. Your eye doctor will evaluate your visual heath, your current eye condition and other relevant factors.

Correcting Vision Problems With Ortho-K

Ortho-k involves the fitting of specially designed contact lenses, which you need to wear overnight. These are specifically engineered to correct irregularities of your cornea or the clear surface on the front of your eye while you’re asleep. Upon waking up the next day, you remove the lenses and get to see an improvement in your visual acuity.

Studies have shown that ortho-k has a high success rate in correcting refractive errors and slowing the progression of childhood nearsightedness. Also, the rigid contact lenses that you wear nightly allow oxygen to pass through and reach your cornea, keeping it healthy without having to rely on tears to be pumped under the lens. With gas-permeable contacts, you won’t have to worry about dry eyes.
