Regardless of your opinion on them, video games and digital devices have become a mainstay of kids’ lives in the modern age. It’s well-known that too much screen time can be detrimental to your kids’ eyesight, but how does it lead to vision problems?
Computer Vision Syndrome
Staring at a screen for too long can lead to what the American Optometric Association calls Computer Vision Syndrome. Some of the condition’s symptoms are eyestrain, blurred vision and dry eye. Since kids usually hunch over while using a digital device, neck and back aches are a frequent occurrence as well.
Video Games and Eye Strain
These symptoms are often experienced by kids who have been playing video games for a prolonged period. Whenever your child plays video games, their eyes have to focus harder on the screen. This often leads to eye strain because of two factors: glare and the time needed to finish video game campaigns.
Glare from the screen, or any reflective surface for that matter, forces the eyes to focus more. And, this strain is further exacerbated by the tendency for people not to blink while staring at screens. Adjusting the screen’s brightness and reminding your kids to look away from the screen for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes should reduce eye strain.
If, however, your child continues to experience these symptoms even after observing the aforementioned practices, it would be a good idea to visit your local eye doctor.
Some Unexpected Benefits
It’s not all bad, however. Contrary to what many parents may believe, playing video games in moderation has some surprising benefits for your kids’ eyesight. It has been observed that action-oriented video games can improve kids’ hand-eye coordination and their efficiency in visual tasks like reading.
If you want to learn more about how to regulate your kids’ video game time, it would be a good idea to consult your eye doctor.
