4 ways to reduce the risk of digital eye strain

digital eye strain

Overworking your eyes can cause eye fatigue or discomfort, especially when daily activities involve staring at your computer screen or smartphone for an extended period. Blue light emitted by digital screens may also damage your vision.

To reduce the risk of digital eye strain, an eye doctor from Advanced Eyecare Consultants shares some ways to reduce the risk of digital eye strain in today’s post.

Proper Lighting

Improper lighting in your home can trigger digital eye strain. This may be due to excessively bright light, whether from natural or artificial sources. Contrary to popular belief, your ambient light should be half as bright as that found in most offices. To avoid this problem when using your computer, cover your windows with drapes, blinds or shades. Minimizing the number of artificial lighting sources in your home office can also prevent the risk of digital eye strain.

Frequent Breaks

Follow the 20-20-20 rule when working in front of your computer. This involves gazing at a distant object 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This will help relax your eyes and reduce eye fatigue.

Blinking

Your optometrist may also suggest blinking more frequently when using your computer. Blinking is one way to lubricate and prevent drying of the eyes. You may also use eye drops with special dry eye formulation. Note that these are not similar to the eye ointments that minimize eye redness.

Eye Exam

People who constantly use their computer are most prone to digital eye strain. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health recommends computer users to have an eye exam at least once a year. During the exam, your eye care specialist will ask how much time you use a computer and suggest some ways to minimize eye strain. This includes using prescription eyeglasses with a special coating.
