LASIK Aftercare Do’s and Don’ts

LASIK surgery is a procedure that uses lasers to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Laser surgery helps reshape the eye cornea, allowing the proper focus of light onto the retina. The eye is a sensitive organ, and it is very important to take care of the eyes after LASIK surgery. Proper care will help prevent complications or infections. Proper LASIK aftercare will help ensure problem-free recovery.

Improved vision involves more than simply getting surgery. Effective recovery is just as important as the surgery itself. LASIK surgery does not require much downtime, and it will not interrupt your life too much. Many people experience itching, tearing, and irritation in the eyes soon after LASIK surgery. Following some simple do’s and don’ts can ensure safe and successful recovery on the path to great vision.

Aftercare Do’s

  • Following the Surgeon’s Instructions

It is very important to follow the post-care instructions from the eye surgeon. After the LASIK procedure, the surgeon will give you instructions on how to ensure a quick recovery. Following the instructions diligently will ensure that you recover fast.

  • Avoiding Strenuous Activities

Following LASIK surgery, it is important to rest as much as possible and avoid any activities that may be strenuous. Put off intense workouts or activities for at least two weeks after the procedure. Consult your surgeon before you go back to your regular exercises.

  • Wearing Protective Eyewear

After the LASIK procedure, you will receive an eye shield that you will wear while you sleep. The shield will help protect your eyes until you recover completely. It is also important to wear sunglasses outdoors and protective eyewear during sports and other activities.

Aftercare Don’ts

  • Avoid Driving for 24 Hours

You should avoid driving immediately after your surgery. Make transport arrangements when you go in for surgery and for 24 hours after that. Each patient is different, and recovery can take longer for some people.

  • Avoid Touching or Rubbing the Eyes

You are likely to experience some watering, itching, and slight discomfort after the LASIK surgery. It is important to avoid rubbing the eyes and refrain from touching the eyes until you are completely healed. You will receive medication and care instructions for the procedure. Keep the eyes closed for a few minutes after administering the eye drops.

  • Avoid Medication Not Prescribed by the Surgeon

In an attempt to reduce irritating sensations, many people resort to the use of eye drops. You should avoid using any medication or eye drops that are not prescribed by the surgeon. The surgeon will prescribe antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops to help with the healing process.

Clean your eyes at least two times a day using sterile tissues to clean around the eyelids. It is important to inform the eye doctor of intense irritation or itching that you may experience after the surgery. If you experience a sudden reduction in vision, pain, discharge, or redness, contact the doctor immediately. Ensure that you keep up with all the follow-up appointments.
